I don't know about other buildings in our stake, but I have only seen the crab box at our stake center. My ward is not the stake center, but in our building, each Ward has their own mic (very different ones) and xlr cable (also very different) to use mostly for baby blessings.

Actually, our cultural hall audio has been broken for maybe 5+ years now and two of the wards (that I know of with ours being one of them) have purchased portable PA systems (same exact one by the way) to use at events. The fm guy has come many times and mentioned it would get fixed, but never has. The portable PA system that was purchased (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1 ... _120v.html) does work, but it is way too small to fill the space of our cultural hall so it is usually very difficult to understand anything being said.

Anyways, I am going to look for through our buildIng for the crab box that is supposed to be there. Hopefully, it is sitting in a drawer somewhere.

Find a tech guy that knows about inexpensive "direct boxes".
You can purchase a direct box for as little as $10 from eBay vendors (link).

These boxes are great for matching impedance and attenuating signals from headphone and line level (RCA jacks) sources to the church sound system microphone jacks in the cultural hall and chapel.
