Turning on stake clerk's computer remotely

Postby carloswm85 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 3:27 pm

Hi, everybody. I'm Carlos from Argentina. I'm a stake secretary.

Is it possible to turn on the stake clerk's computer remotely? I know that I can work remotely on the computer using Team Viewer, and even use the Team Viewer's feature Wake On Lan to wake up the computer remotely (https://www.google.com.ar/search?q=wake+on+lan+team+viewer&oq=wake+on+lan+team+viewer), but for doing so I need to be there for turning on the computer and getting the access password in the first case, or having an additional computer turned on at all times in the later. What I want to do is to turn the computer on remotely or maybe wake it up without the need of been there in the first place or having to use an additional dispositive. We have a very large stake, so the stake secretary in charge of finances is at some 150 miles from the stake center and he does finances from his city. We use Team Viewer on a weekly basis.

As far as I know, we have a switch, a router and... I think that a gateway. We have Windows 10 in the computer, and Sophos antivirus is not working properly since we took the Microsoft update from W7 to W10.

Any assistance in solving this problem will be appreciated.

Regards.

From the Meetinghouse Technology Policy
4.10 Remote access of Church computers is expressly prohibited except in cases where all of the following are true:

4.10.1 When done by official Church support personnel or under the direction of a stake president by a stake technology specialist, stake clerk, or member of a stake presidency.

4.10.2 When used to ensure a Church computer is functioning properly or to help someone use the system.

4.10.3 When not used to enter data into MLS and not used to access sensitive information.

4.10.4 When the software used is properly licensed.

4.10.5 When the software is set up to utilize standards-based encryption (AES-128 or better).

According to this video (advance to 31:10), using the free Team Viewer in a church setting is a violation of their Terms of Service.

Maybe Argentina is different, but that's the rules we have to play by in North America.

As far as I know, we've been authorized to use this system by the Area Presidency.

Sadly we are not complying with points from 2 to 4.

I don't see any solution for solving this conflict. Do you?

I know that the stake financial assistant clerk uses his personal computer for making his work, and also he uses a near ward's computer owned by the Church. I think that the only possible solution we have for this is him using only the ward computer with an MLS installation for the stake finances. Is there any conflict between this hypothetical installation and the ward's MLS installation?

By the way, where can I see all the videos related to technology in the Church?

I would check with the Area Presidency to see if you have an exception. The policy I referred to indicates that it's worldwide.

Multiple units can share a MLS system. That's not a problem. What is a problem is trying to run one unit from multiple MLS systems. So, if the stake financial assistant is using his own machine, I'm not sure how anyone else can get into MLS.

As far as using personal computers:
4.6.2 MLS may not be installed on donated computers.

4.7.1 Installing MLS software on home computers is prohibited.

Good question. The blog went inactive. I don't see an easy place to find all the prior talks, but they can be found by using the search function in tech.lds.org. I found that reference by searching the forum for a prior post I made on the subject.

Ok.

No. He uses his personal computer for using Team Viewer, not MLS.

This is a feature someone should fix, I think. The videos seem to be pretty useful.

I've asked the stake presidency if we've been authorized or not to work remotely in our stake. They've told me that we've been authorized by the area presidency and that the 70 on charge of our stake is well aware of how we are working. This exception has been made due to the special geographical circumstances of our stake.

Now I may ask you again if you know about any method, or even if it is possible, to turn on a computer remotely. Now I'm thinking also that we are going to need to find an option to Team Viewer since we are not allowed to use it. Do you know any good option to this?

It is possible. I would suggest that you work with a trusted member who has computer experience and will be able to help you set the computer to respond to a remote request. As for Team Viewer, the same trusted member will probably be aware of other programs that may be used to accomplish this task.

Moderator note: Because you are working with an exception to a process that is normally prohibited, this is not something that should be discussed here in the open Forum. However, if someone here at the Forum has a suggestion for carloswm85, you might certainly send him a Private Message with details.

Most computers have a "Wake on LAN" feature. However, the problem is trying to get the command though the firewall/router. If you have a church-controlled firewall, I doubt if you will be able to configure it.

Why turn off the computer?

You could use an Internet power switch. Google for info.

You could use a manual timer to turn on the computer at certain time(s) or day(s).

Just curious what the Clerk needs to do remotely in MLS? Most everything can be done anywhere in LCR at lds.org?
At the Ward level the only thing that needs MLS is donation entry and check printing both of which require the user to be physically present.
