Woman called as Sunday School Secretary - Can't assign calling on Leader and Clerk Resources

#1

Post by Zeus1776 »

Hey Friends,
I am Sunday School President, and recently, a sister was called as my secretary. On Leader and Clerk Resources, our Ward Clerk is unable to assign her to the calling, as it is set up to only accept men. So two questions: First, can this be circumvented somehow, or resolved by someone with more power than us? Or second, if that isn't possible, is there a work-around? Can we give the permissions of the Sunday School Secretary to a custom calling? Thanks in advance.

Handbook 2: 12.2.4: "If needed, the bishopric may call a brother to serve as ward Sunday School secretary."

LCR enforces the Handbook. There are no work arounds.

I've read and am familiar with the handbook. In this case, it was the bishop's idea, I was fine with it, and the stake president approved it, so I'm not sitting here advocating the downfall of the church. I'm just trying to make things work. I guess if you can't work around it though, then you can't work around it. Your swiftness on the previous response is appreciated.

The stake president might want to have a chat with his presiding authority. He may have a different view on things.

What a good idea. If the general authorities can have female secretaries then you should be fine. Also since your Stake Pres. approved it.

Let's look at the facts:
  • The only way to give the Sunday school secretary the needed permissions to LCR is to place them in that calling.
  • The rules about who is allowed to be placed in that position is handed down to the developers by the Priesthood department. It's not up to the developers.
  • The limitations are consistent with the policy spelled out in the General Handbook.
  • Neither the bishop nor the stake president has to power to change any of the above.
  • If anyone wants to advocate for a change, they need to take that up with Church Headquarters or their presiding authority. The forum is not an appropriate channel.
Regardless of if a person could do a good job, I think it's a bad idea to place someone in a calling when they can't have access to the tools needed to do their job. Attempts to circumvent the restriction is likely to create more problems.

This thread is from 2 years ago. OP's (original poster's) question has been answered, even if it wasn't the answer they wanted to hear. Since the conversation is moving outside of the forum's charter, the thread will be locked.

Maybe at some time in the future, the requirements will change.
