Michael Carter

Michael Carter   Chief Information Security Officer

Michael Carter has his dream job. “In a deeply personal way, I feel that I’m part of my Father’s business and have a role in building and caring for His kingdom.” Michael loves the challenge of leading a great team working together to engineer solutions and solve problems in a way that makes a difference.  In his role as CISO, he directs Church-wide information security and compliance, as well as Church I.T. policy.

Michael’s career at the Church is diverse and distinguished. His experience working for the Church in the Missionary, Finance and Records, Information Systems and Communications departments, and Brigham Young University, in addition to serving in the Pacific Islands area, has given Michael a vast knowledge of the Church and how to get things done.

Before Church employment, Michael was employed by Sequent Computers, IBM, and the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency. He was also a managing partner of Carter, Johnson, and Associates, a firm that specialized in I.T. operations and security.

Some of his accomplishments include serving as a chief information officer (CIO); leading IT reengineering engagements at Boeing and Coca Cola; re-architecting and directing operations for the Church’s 17 MTCs; authoring Open Systems Security; achieving CISSP, CISA, CNSP, and CSA credentials; and engineering an intrusion detection system deployed at over 10,000 locations. His forte is information security governance, managing technology, business process engineering, and ERP systems.

Michael loves the outdoors and is an avid scuba diver.  His greatest love is his wife, Karla, and their six wonderful children. Put that together with his current “dream job,” and for Michael, life couldn’t be better.
