Re: Donation Question

Our ward's full-time missionaries recently did a service project and the people they helped gave them a donation. The missionaries would like to donate that money to our ward's mission fund; however, the check was made out to "LDS Missionary Fund". I'm pretty sure our ward can't include t...

Re: No-name Donation

We have received donations with no name and in cash. It seems there was or is a policy on how to enter this type of rare donation. Do we use ANONYMOUS or UNKNOWN? Can't find it in the HELP CENTER Please advise. We had a similar issue last year, where we received money orders about once a month with...

Re: Member Donation Statements for Tax

While we can use custom dates to provide a listing of what's been donated, IIRC, the tax statements are hard-wired for the date and has the legalize that makes it a tax statement. The hard-wired legal statement is specifically for the U.S. IRS. The ward would have to create statements with any requ...

Re: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for finance tracking

Not to brag, but I am a CPA with over 34 years of accounting experience, with over 10 years of experience as ward and stake financial clerk and over 8 years as a stake auditor. I don't think there needs to be any sort of formal separation of donation and expense records. Most of the wards I have bee...

Re: Reporting Tithing on mls

You might also check to make sure that the Stake has them listed in those positions. I have found over the years that it doesn't matter what position you list them in at the Ward level, the Stake has to have them listed in the correct position for them to have proper privileges.

Re: Interunit transfer issues with the OTHER account

I have been a Stake Clerk, Ward Financial Clerk and Stake Auditor (not all at the same time, of course) and the issue with the "Other" account has never been about having a zero balance. The issue is that the funds are received and used for an authorized, allowable purpose within a reasona...

Re: Check Escheated: Now What?

I just went through this. You need to contact the ward member to find out what they want to do. In my case, they had left the ward and really didn't want the money, so I called SLC and had them void the check. This then came back into our ward budget (it has already been deducted from your ward budg...

Re: Who Signs Checks?

I'm sure that the Handbook 1, states if a person is serving in the position of clerk they cannot be an auditor also. Actually, we checked Handbook 1 in my stake and the Stake Financial Clerk cannot be an auditor. However, there is no such prohibition on a Ward Financial Clerk being an auditor (as l...

Re: New missionary subcategory inactive and can't activate

We had this issue with one of our missionaries and it was fixed with a call to support. I don't know if this will be fixed in MLS 3.6, but call support if it doesn't.

Re: Who Signs Checks?

I've encountered several auditors and clerks over the years who insist the Bishop must sign all checks. I have been a financial clerk for many years and an auditor for many years (currently, I am both) and I can tell you that there is guidance and there is opinion. While performing an audit, one th...
