Language Toolbar
I have found disabling the language bar and text services speeds up XP machines significantly. You may not want to do this if you have non-english users of your machine. Go to: 'Control Panel' -> 'Regional and Language Options' Select the 'Languages' tab Click 'Details' Select the 'Advanced' tab Che...

Defragment HDD
If you have time, it might not be a bad idea to defrag the hard drive. While the built-in one will work, I've been using a program called MyDefrag which looks promising. I like 'Defraggler'. It has a portable installer, so you can copy it to your USB drive and run it anywhere with out installing it...

Test updates
And, in SOME cases, the use of our server is still required to complete an update It appears that a new sync may be one of the cases that MUST go through the third party. I would be interested to see a trace of an update to an install with existing data. I think until we have some corroborative inf...

Proxy Appliance
My problem with the proxy solution is the difficulty. Untangle is nice, but WAY to technical for most. Most of my family has needed my help to set up their plug-and-play wireless routers. I think we need a packaged solution. Most families I know already use a consumer router with wireless for their ...

Filter / Proxy
I love the idea of a public proxy log. A solid proxy will even show or block anonymizing services like TOR. You might not see what they are looking at, but you will be able to see that they are hiding something. A quick check of the browser cache should help confirm what is going on (empty or not!)....

Web applications
This is an objectively true statement. But, each and every one of the freeware test tools is lacking in some critical integration with different kinds of applications. Also, because they are stand alone, they are more difficult to integrate into a testing framework as compared to QTP and Quality Ce...

Ok... Here is my idea. I think the software should be done using PHP, MySQL and Apache. These three packages can be loaded on any stand alone machine or networked machine and can be run independently. The system is open source and Free. The program should be easy to download from web to any machine...

Stakes and D-Star
The potential for the stakes to get tied into the system. Did it ever move beyond the 'idea' stage? In order for stakes to use d-star systems, all they would need is a d-star capable radio. If you are talking about more integration than that, I doubt the church would invest the money. I am not awar...

Dupe!
It is a Church policy which allows work to be done on a small amount of information. It is a personal decision made by each individual and the spirit. Personal responsibility is needed. ... I think much of the confusion about duplication in nFS is based on an assumption that nFS is intended to crea...

Monitoring vs filtering
I have raised two relatively technology savvy teens. I found that filtering was not so much needed as much as effective monitoring. The principle is to remove annonymity and help the boys develop good habits on the internet by discussing their usage in FHE. Logs should be kept for all users, includ...
