Meetinghouse Security <wink>

We haven't had any problems with theft-related break-ins since they moved all the media equipment in the library to a locked closet. The Church unit computers were always so outdated that they were never a target. With the new batch of Dells, they've put bars on the clerk's windows. Our problem has ...

I've been asked to keep our topics more closely related to technology for Church issues. That makes me sad. I'm going to miss the 500th post celebrations.:p Living in a neighborhood in which at least 70% of the residents attend the same Church, at the same published time, for the same 3-hour block,...

APRS sounds like fun. But when the police impound your car as evidence, they may not let you retrieve your HAM rig. The best we can hope for is to keep the crooks out in the first place or minimize the damage if they do get in. How about tech as a deterrent? Interior or exterior lights on timers? Ho...

Neighborhood Security

We've had a wave of home break-ins in our stake recently. The neighbor behind me got hit last week, and now the alarm companies are going door-to-door, selling their systems, and security signs are popping up on front porches. Last winter there was a strange pickup truck roaming the neighborhood tak...

Does anybody have experience with the Via Epia EK 8000EG mini-ITX board? It's got dual LAN, and it's fan-less, meaning you can hide it and forget about it. Will it be available long enough in its current configuration? Are stable Linux drivers readily available? Price: ~$200 Specifications: 800MHz F...

This posting in another thread got me started (and rmrichesjr seems to have a handle on the concept as well): I have used many different 'solutions' in an attempt to filter internet for my home. By far the most effective is what I now use: Built from an old machine, make sure it has two network card...

I'm sorry too. I re-read the post that you referred to, and it pegged my snarky meter. So I nuked it.

If anyone in my ward or elsewhere wants my help to make their home safer by switching to secure software, I'm eager to help. Perhaps we can cook up a solution here for an inexpensive home server, with a recommended hardware list, Kickstart installer, and how-to guide. Some smarty-pants will read th...

I wouldn't consider having a computer without some sort of Internet Filtering program - even after all our kids leave the nest in a few years. Can I ask why? From a technical standpoint, I don't see how that enhances security. If it's a self-control or temptation issue, then that's a different matt...

Need Manuals or Training for Some Gadgets

After our building was recently remodeled, including the addition of a new A/V system, we started to notice some funny things. For example: sometimes the sound from the Primary room would be piped into the Relief Society room. We fiddled around with the rotary dial in the back of the Primary room an...
