I kind of think you are both mistaken. My impression was that Church IT is putting something together for the LUWS, not MLS. It didn't appear to me that the project was dead either. The inherent problem with that speculation is, I think, is this: If all a LUWS enhancement does is render a map of wa...

When we were finished with our organization instead of sending up maps with the boundaries marked on them we sent shapefiles in the specified coordinate system and appropriate metadata. However when we contacted the church GIS Department (just call church HQ and ask for the GIS dept) they s...

The geocode field in MLS is explicity for local use, and does not sound like it will ever contain lat/long. If I were grouping people in MLS, I would explicity put something not lat/long in the geocode field, as lat/long groups are only useful with boundaries, and are not easy to interpret. I would...

You are probably OK to release it to this forum, most of the tools here are not any more polished than what you describe. Your tool fills a common need, and would benefit from a strong following this early. As of today I am leaning in that direction. I likely will do so within a week or so. You mig...

Wow, welcome to the forum! I'm very much interested in test driving your VBS when you get it ready. It sounds like you've found and addressed some of the problems I've run into with other solutions. I posted a status report and general description on another thread. http://tech.lds.org/forum/showpo...

Pondering where to go on geocoding / mapping development

I am approaching the end of development on my own script-based solution to the problem of geocoding ward addresses and mapping the output in Google Earth. The complexity of the task grew to the point that it really ought to have a real user interface and a proper SQL back-end, but that is more ambit...

I thought that Boomerbubba was interested in reading the file so he could figure out its contents. For that Wordpad or any other program that can format the document would suffice. Certainly when it comes to actually using the file then the embedded control characters must be handled properly. I do...

Thanks for your quick response. I tried playing around with it some more but still no success. The ward clerks usually work on Tuesday night so I will try to get part of a real MLS file from them and work from that. To get extracts from MLS, someone with Admin prviliges on the system will need to b...

I have seen paper maps and legal descriptions of ward/stake boundaries shared with members of the unit(s) involved, particularly during and after a split or boundary change. However, it might be a good idea to wait for a more official statement before distributing the GIS file more widely than to t...

Who says boundaries are not for release?

It is really too bad that the brethern do not release this information. As you may know, church HQ has a GIS department that maps out boundaries for all the different units. If your stake president requests maps of your stake the department will send him maps of all the boundaries. However, the bre...
