I was the CTO for Linspire, a very popular Linux distribution Very popular? ;) We sold and gave away many many copies of Linspire to OEM's and individual users and we had to support them. It was no small task! I'm not saying it would be trivial, then again supporting Windows is not trivial. But wit...

I'm a bit surprised the data source IO handler(s) weren't modularised from the beginning.

The only guidance that has been delivered by the Church is guidance you have already read. At some level local leadership has to make the call whether they are violating policy or not. Where we tend to draw a firmer line is when we see people asking members of the ward to use a website, especially ...

No, not in the source. In the data files. But if we release the code to MLS, we have to release how to access the data files. So anyone who grabs the source could get access to the data files through the source. Is there anything that can't get without an admin account? As district clerk, I persona...

Here's one response that may also apply to your situation: http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?p=8924 I'm not sure that it does. Again they are referring to a publicly available site, one offering services that lds.org offers besides. My site does *not* represent the church to the public.

We have not invited developers to help on software we are building yet as we are in the process of ensuring that we have the processes in place to protect data. For example with MLS, there is no way for us to limit access to a developer from getting into confidential information within the MLS syst...

I'd happily share it. Just waiting to see the admins reply regarding what church policy says.

No one is a bigger Linux fan than me but until you know all of the issues in supporting a Linux operating system (like I do) I've never supported it (at least not as a job title), but I do know Linux well. I was a Linux system admin (Sun Raq4 and Debian). for ontarioweb.ca for a period of time, and...

Contributions does not equal open source. The Church could enlist people to help work on code without that code being open sourced. For several reasons I don't think that is the same thing. Besides, I've never been inivted, and I'd have looked the code over at least once before now if it was open s...

It's ok as long as we're not debating church policy. Nope, I don't think church policy covers this situation, its not a public website :) Its not even accessible outside authentication. PS: You don't want to get me started on church policy, their security procedures are very weak in terms of MLS an...
