Editing text in Send a Message

I use Send a Message for a weekly newsletter and I am having trouble in editing to make some of the edits show in the newsletter. I can do bold, change the font, etc, but using color to highlight anything is very inconsistent. I'm wondering if there is a secret as to how to make the colors show in the message consistently.
