Sealing to second spouse after death

My father and mother were married for eternity in the SL temple in 1942. My 2 sisters and brother and I were BIC.
My father died in 1981 and my mother remarried for time only in 1983 to a man previously married in the temple to his wile who had also died.
They were married for more than 25 years and had a wonderful loving relationship. They both passed away 6 and 4 years ago.
This week my sister learned that somehow they were sealed as husband and wife for eternity in the Portland temple.
We loved our step father but have 2 questions:

1) how could this happen without any of us being consulted?
2) can we have this action canceled?

It is standard practice to seal deceased persons to all spouses they were married to in life. The issues will be sorted out in the millennium or the final judgement.

As for permission, the verbiage from FamilySearch says:

You must either be one of the closest living relatives, or you must obtain permission from one of the closest living relatives. If you are not a spouse, child, parent, or sibling of the deceased, please obtain permission from one of the closest living relatives before doing the ordinances. The closest living relatives are an undivorced spouse (the spouse to whom the individual was married when he or she died), an adult child, a parent, or a brother or sister.

Verbal approval is acceptable. Family members should work together to determine when the ordinances will be done and who will do them.

It could have been approved by one of his children or maybe a sibling. I don't see any requirement to consult with any of the others for permission. It just needs approval from one of them.

You can report "abuse" on the FamilySearch website. They may investigate to see if it was submitted correctly.

The work was probably done by a cousin who is related more distantly. In terms of policy, the requirement to obtain permission is only applicable for people born in the last 110 years. Depending on when your parents were born, it may or may not apply – but it would have been good manners for them to reach out to closer living relatives for permission. Maybe they didn't know whether there were any close living relatives.
