From my perspective, you are safest if you stick with a standard that has been most widely adopted. For example, CDs were created somewhere mid 1980's and yet you'd have no problem finding something to read a CD with today.
For now, I think DVD will fit the bill. I believe it has enough resolution to capture the details of the source material, and yet it can easily be transfered to some future format.
