All clerks have access to cdol and it's very easy to get a unit number from cdol. I just tried a random ward, got the number, pasted it into the field and clicked on 'continue'. I then could choose a missionary from that ward. Very easy and cool!
The easiest way for any member to find out a unit number is to use maps.lds.org. Should work for most folks who know where their favorite missionary lived before leaving.
