Are any of the mls forms (such as a child of record) available online? Do I have to use MLS and print a hard copy?

The only online source of official forms is store.lds.org but some are only available through the ward administration section and even then, some can only be accessed by members with specific callings. If you can find it, they often provide a download option (pdf).

You can also use MLS to generate many of the forms in a blank fomat:
Open the form in MLS, use a print-to-pdf utility to generate a .pdf of the blank form.

As an additional correction, if you have sufficient rights on lds.org/leader, some forms can be filled out and submitted through that portal.
