Non-member children not listed in Household

#1

Post by wmcot »

We have a number of children in our ward from South Sudanese families who haven't been blessed or baptized. They attend our Primary classes but do not appear on the roles since they are listed under the Family tab rather than the Household tab. Is there a way to add them to the Household so the will appear on our roles?

The clerk uses a Child Record Form to collect the information needed to create a membership record. The parents sign the form, and the clerk must scan and upload the form image when creating the membership record. This can only be done for children under the age of eight. All others must be baptized before a record can be created.
Complete this form when creating a record for a child under the age of eight. The clerk should enter this information into Leader and Clerk Resources. If the child was blessed, print a blessing certificate and give it to the child’s parents. Keep the form on file until after the next membership audit.

Dana has given the mechanics. The policy can be found in the General Handbook 33.6.2. Basically, the parents have to give permission for a Child of Record to be created.

This tends to come up with convert families. The mission baptizes the parent(s) and notes the existing of the children on the parent's records (the family tab). It's up to the ward to create the Child of Record, adding them to the household and the roles of the Primary.

So when I go to create a record, it gives me a message about "Possible Duplicate Records" and lists a couple of matches for the child with *This is a record for a non-member related to a member of the Church. Will that other record go away once we create the Child of Record? If not, how do we remove it so there aren't duplicates?

The records will be merged. Make sure any possible duplicate records are in fact duplicate nonmember records for the new member for whom you are trying to create a record. You may be prompted when they are merged what information on the nonmember record needs to be included in the membership record.

A couple of possibilities:
1) The records already exist, but just are not in your ward. I'd do a record request and see what happens.
2) The children are recorded on the parent's records, but no "child of record" was created for them. If the family are converts, that would explain a lot as the mission will notate all children, but doesn't create records for anyone not baptized. You should be able to create the record, but I'm not sure of the details.
