Assistant Ward Clerk vs Ward History Specialist

#1

Post by ckmcdonald »

Handbook 2 (13.4.3) states that an Assistant Ward Clerk can be called to be over "historical records", among other things like finance, membership, etc.
I understand that the Ward Clerk is responsible to create the annual ward history which I'm assuming falls under (or is) this reference of "historical records" in the Handbook.
I also know that it's relatively common for a Bishop to call a Ward History Specialist to off-load the ward history effort off from the Ward Clerk.
This could lead one to assume that like "Finance Clerk" is just a name given to an Assistant Ward Clerk who has been asked to help with the ward finances, that Ward History Specialist might be a name given to an Assistant Ward Clerk being asked to care for the ward historical work. Yet, the same rules for being and calling a Ward History Specialist are not the same as for an Assistant Ward Clerk. So it's pretty clear that the Ward History Specialist isn't an Assistant Ward Clerk. But from the Handbook description of the ward history work, the Ward History Specialist is doing the job of an Assistant Ward Clerk. Can someone help clarify this a little for me?

Handbook 1 section 13.7 indicates that the bishop can call a History Specialist who works under the direction of the assigned clerk. So the History Specialist is not an Assistant Ward Clerk but rather someone called to assist the clerk.

And unless you really mean to give that person rights to fiance and membership records, I'd suggest recording it as a custom position.

I assume you mean a Ward Assistant Clerk assigned to historical records. The History Specialist is a standard position under Other Callings > History.

If a bishop called an Assistant Ward Clerk to be over historical work what besides the Ward History would he do?
Seems like there are two different position define to do the same thing?

"Assistant Ward Clerk" is granted the same rights as an "Assistant Ward Clerk - Finance" AND "Assistant Ward Clerk - Membership".

If you can find an "Assistant Ward Clerk - History", great. But I wouldn't put him as "Assistant Ward Clerk" as he would have far more rights then he should have.

So If a person is NOT classified as an assistant clerk and just called as a Ward History specialist can this be a woman or man? Where an assistant clerk would need to be a priesthood holder?
