On the technology side of things, I would definitely:

  1. Make sure the bishop has an LDS Account -- he'll need it for other things on the list. The counselors should also have an LDS Account.
  2. Check with the stake clerk and make sure the stake has filled out a Leader and Unit Change Request for him. Until that happens, he won't really be considered to be the bishop by CDOL, and thus other systems that verify his calling based on CDOL won't give him the access he needs.
  3. Make sure the new bishopric is entered in MLS under Organizations, using standard callings.
  4. Create MLS logins for the bishopric, giving them appropriate permissions.
  5. Enter the new bishopric in LUWS.
  6. Once #2 has been processed, verify that the bishop shows up in CDOL correctly. Also check for the rest of the bishopric appearing there with standard callings.
  7. Make sure the bishop can process missionary applications on http://www.lds.org/mss and have him specify whatever clerks or others he wants to have access to the missionary system.
  8. Check on http://new.lds.org/directory under Ward Leaders to make sure the bishopric appears properly, with the correct contact information (and photos, if desired).
  9. Print a new Signature Card from MLS (under Finance), and have the bishopric and whoever else should be able to sign checks fill in and sign the card; then send it in to the address specified on the card.
I believe that stationery such as tithing envelopes is automatically ordered, but if you want additional stationery such as windowed envelopes, you would need to order that yourself.

I'm sure that there are many other things, but this list will hopefully help get you started.

Stationary items are not automatically ordered, you need to order them. The fastest way to do so is to phone Distribution Services. Please note that they cannot process the order until the business day after the new bishop is listed in CDOL.

If your new bishopric have no experience in a bishopric, be prepared to help them learn their administrative duties. There will be many things that will come up as you move forward. One of the most common ones I have run into over the years is properly gathering the needed information and completing ordinance records.

Super! Thanx so much. I was told to seek "labels" for donation envelopes until the new ones arrive. Is anyone aware if labels are available for donation envelopes for new Bishops to use until revised envelopes arrive?

Distribution Services used to provide labels, but they don't anymore. You have to print your own. It should only take 1 to 2 weeks to get new envelopes.

They are available, but probably not in the way you're thinking. Any office supply store can supply you with laser printer labels that will do the trick. :D My hunch is that you've already got some hanging around. ;)

You can also do what I suggested here and "reprint" each envelope with a black box blocking out the old information. I've been doing this for a while now and it works, but I'm wondering if I'm wearing out our printer prematurely doing this...

Actually, I had stationary long before our Bishop was setup in CDOL. I mailed the order in, but the Stake also mailed the change in. My order was filled first.

Go figure.
