As a matter of standard practice I have learned that whenever a hardware device is installed that the latest driver from the manufacturer should be installed. Just as you describe the Windows resident drivers for the device may be quite old. Microsoft has posted several bulletins to their knowledge base about this issue. Microsoft attempts to overcome this issue by providing driver updates for your system when a Windows update is performed. Even then the drivers Microsoft provides may be older than the latest one the manufacturer has through their on-line tech support.
