Am I to understand that a locked, ventilated cabinet is NOT required for installation? I am completely lost on this. My Stake Center has a small wall mounted cabinet with the firewall and cable modem in it. Now that I am installing internet in all of the other buildings in the stake, I was under the impression that the equipment had to be secured.

Any advice?

I've not seen a policy that requires it.

Can you do me a big favor and tell me the brand of that cabinet? I'm wanting to find one myself, but haven't been able to. I want to secure the equipment so as to prevent anyone from bypassing the firewall. But it's something I want to do, not because of any policy.

Russell, I tried to get my FM Group to get a locking ventilated wall cabinet such as we find in two other buildings in the stake for our FHC. They were unwilling because of price but had a catalog for them. You could ask them for the information even if they will not order it using FM budget funds.

My FMG was unable to get that information to me. The best they could do is point me to the Granger catalog, but that's like $800.

I looked this morning at the Stake Center and CANNOT find any kind of branding information on it. The could be something on the back or bottom, but at this point, I'm not ready to unmount it. I'm headed to Home Depot today to try to find something that will work. The cabinet that is in the stake center is actually MUCH larger than I need for the other buildings... it is probably even much larger than it needs to be. I searched Newegg and other sites looking for cabinets, but the cheapest I could find were just over $200 - and they were proper rack 19" mouning cabinets capable of storing servers and or network gear - overkill for what I need.

My plan is to find a locking metal box at HD and "ventilate" it myself with a drill or something. If I have any luck, I'll post.

Check out the circuit breaker panels. You can get a rather substantial lockable box that looks big enough for $50. That's what I've been looking at. Ugly, but functional.

I have seen a branded rack in our Institute building, but when I chased down the brand, it was from Australia/New Zealand. I'll have to inquire how it found it's way to our building.

Locking rack under $250 with shipping

Postby rknelson » Fri Apr 02, 2010 4:25 pm

We recently purchased a wall mounted rack for this purpose. The company has several sizes. The one we purchased is a 9U with locking front door, and side panels. I really like the removable (locking) side panels because it makes routing wires to the patch panel easier. It comes with a fan mounted in the top - I'm not sure I will ever use the fan it would be nicer if it had a thermostat and only came on when needed. The total cost was $246.05 delivered. It looks professional, is functional and solid. You can save little more with a smaller rack in the same series. I put the modem, firewall, switch, and patch panel in the rack. It seems to work nicely. Of course the lock is only to keep honest people from tampering. Here are the details from the invoice:
Quest Manufacturing 200 Series 20"D Compact Wall Mount with Removable Side Panels - 9 RU (WM2019-09-02). I ordered it from an online distributor. If you want any other details feel free to send me a message.

We located our cable modems and firewalls in maintenance rooms, sound box rooms/closets and the attic (which has walk-ways). All of these rooms have limited access (key control) and not very many people know about the installation except that the internet is now installed.
