MLS on home computer

#1

Post by ffrsqpilot »

Hopefully one of the moderators can point me in the right direction. I am the stake clerk in Montrose, Colorado. Our stake is spread out over a pretty large area. Three of the wards/branches are over 70 miles away from the stake center. With all the changes that take place (not unique to our stake I'm sure) new clerks are being called and they need help. I am more than happy to help with MLS questions as we have a technology specialist who can help with all other areas. But often I get called at home with a question and I try as best I can to answer the questions and provide help, but everyonce in awhile I come across something where it would be beneficial to pull up MLS to help answer something. Okay, so I've laid the background for my question -

Is is okay, or can you physically upload a version (without actual data) on to a home computer? I believe when we orginally installed MLS it had a practice ward you could use to learn the MLS system. At the time I was a ward clerk when we installed MLS and had no problem going down to the church and playing with MLS to become familiar with it. So, in order to help our outlying wards when they call for help when I'm at home, I would like to install MLS on my home computer. But this brings up another question. With all the upgrades to MLS can you also upload the upgrades on your home computer if MLS can be installed on it?

I would really like to have the "practice" ward (if that is the right term) MLS on my home computer as it would really help me help those wards that I can't get immediate answers to. For now I will continue to drive down to the stake center and pull up MLS and call the clerk back but having it on my home computer would be a real help.

To recap:
1. Can you install MLS on a home computer
2. Can you install upgrades as they come out
3. Where would you find all the upgrades to get MLS up to the current 2.8.2 version now out?

Thanks folks.

1. Yes, you can install MLS on a home computer, with the test data. You can find instructions for installation and use of the test data here.

2. Yes, you can install upgrades on your home computer as they come out.

3. You can always get the latest released MLS (and some beta versions as they are being tested) at mls.lds.org. A password is required, which your stake technology specialist should have (it is on page 4 of the Desktop 5.5 instructions, which he should definitely have).

I am in a much smaller stake than yours geographically, but I am constantly using my local MLS installation to do support within my stake, as well as to help answer questions on this forum and a clerks' mailing list I subscribe to. It's a huge time saver, and it gives me the opportunity to do additional research which I would not do if I could only do it in the Church buildings. Since you and I are in stake positions, another benefit of the test data is that it lets you see how MLS operates at the ward level, which is quite different from the stake level.
