Having difficulties with new IP range and wireless router

Hi!

I am the local Stake Tech Geek. During the recent IP range upgrade, our FHC was given separate address ranges for static and dynamic.

Our scenario looks like this:

Gateway: 10.181.61.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Static range: 10.181.61.2 - .16
Dynamic range: 10.181.61.17 - 254

I haven't been able to get our old Linksys 2500 series to deal politely with these settings. Specifically, the router's address must be 192.168.1.x.

Can you please recommend a wireless router that can handle this? I will be checking this email early and purchase what you recommend prior to going to the FHC around 12:00 Pacific time.

If you can help me out without purchasing a new device, I'll be out there earlier.

Please post a case number so when I call I don't have to tell the whole story again.

Work with FM to get a new WAP. And if needed, a new switch.

I'd go with russellhltn's recommendation.

Using a locally purchased wireless router is not a good idea. It may be fine in the short term but when you are released your successor may not have enough skills to maintain the device and the network behind it. A Church provided solution through the FM Group is better set to work with the Church systems, be manageable through TM and any future management systems, and most importantly, supported by Church tech support.

However if you want to keep your current wireless router then we will need some more information about the device. Specifically the model number. Quickly looking on the Internet came up with a model E2500 but nothing else. If it is the E2500 then take a look at this Linksys page. It says you can change the internal and external IP addresses. For the purpose of a FHC connected to a church provided firewall you will need to change the external IP address since that is provided by the firewall. In the Linksys documentation this external IP address is described as the ISP provided address.

It's probably used as a WAP from the days before the church provided the equipment.

But in re-reading this, I've got a question. Prior to the firewall upgrade, the entire building was on a 10.x.x.x subnet. Granted, the new FHC subnet is a different range, but if it used to work on a 10.x.x.x network, why can't it work on one now?

Not speaking for the OP, but we have a dedicated wireless router in each of our 2 FHC's. We use them to provide non-member patrons with wireless Internet access for their own devices. This avoids having to hand out the LDSAccess passwords, while still providing filtered access to Internet resources.
