Missionary Fund Withdrawal process

Post by cchang »

We have a member who is going out on their mission in the next month. Do they deposit their mission funds into their missionary fund account and then the system automatically withdraws from that fund account each month? I'm trying to see how the process works for depositing and withdrawing from the missionary's account.

If you're in an area with equalized contributions then CHQ will withdrawn the standard amount at the beginning of each month (the specific day varies but generally during the first week) from their sub-category starting at the beginning of the month when they leave on the their mission. This often means the first withdrawal is before they actually leave. Any contributions they (or family or others) make should be deposited in their sub-category.

If you're not in an area with equalized contributions then things may work differently. In that case you'd probably need to ask your stake.

As mentioned, the members, including the missionary, contribute to the ward missionary fund. Church headquarters withdraws from the ward fund. The Church then makes funds available to the mission in an amount sufficient to provide for the missionary for his or her food and other expenses, and to pay for a place to live (such as apartments or other approved arrangements).

I would recommend they don't donate it all at one time. If they get sick and have to come home early, that can be problematic as it can't be refunded. I get uncomfortable when people get too far ahead and will contact them.

I had one member that was so far ahead that we had to roll the excess to the next child to go on a mission. It rolled two times to the next two children before I got him to let it catch up. He was kind of using the excess as a savings account for future missionaries. He has lots of kids so it was going ok but it was more risk than just putting it in an account at the bank.
