Windos 10 Activation Key

#1

Post by RiverMist35 »

I just upgraded our 2 of our Windows 7 Pro computers to Windows 10 in our FHC. Both are asking for a Windows 10 Activation Key. I spoke with support once but what they had me do did not fix the issue and now they're not calling me back. Must be really busy. ANyone else run into this issue and have a solution?

Did they instruct you to upgrade Windows? My understanding is the church is using an extended program to allow Win7 to continue to get updates. Perhaps until the hardware ages out and becomes ready for replacement.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

Windows 10 is only licensed for specific Dell (In the UK anyway) models. The models that can be upgraded are documented in the FHC Application Finder app, which is only available on an official FHC computer.

The appropriate FHC images are also available from the same app. Using any other method to upgrade FHC computer will not work correctly.

Been doing this about 9 years for my Stake.

I have Dell optiplex 9030's, which were bought in the age of Windows 10.. and are very capable of running it (although slow, it would have been better if they had been smart an purchased SSD's)

So you are telling me.... I can't upgrade to the free Windows 10 this should have been purchased with?

I really wish the church was better at communication on changes... this is pathetic... as a STS I really have felt in the dark on all the ongoing changes to tech.

As the STS many years ago, when I wanted to upgrade FHC computers to Windows 7, I called FHC Support. They discussed various upgrade options with me, and we decided to submit a standard form to them, signed by my stake president, to provide DVDs with the standard Windows 7 FHC image to each FHC I supported at the time. They kept track of which computers had OEM licenses, and which had licenses purchased for the sake of upgrading to Windows 7. However, I have no idea how such things are done today. I only know that a call to FHC Support is the first step.

Most of the 9030's I've seen are from about 2013-2015, and not only were SSDs still very expensive in those days, but Windows 10 wasn't even released until 2015. But either way, here's the article on how to properly upgrade to Windows 10 and the supported models (although it might be only Stake Tech Specialists that can see it): https://familysearch.org/ask/productSup ... ry-centers. If there's still an activation issue after following the official process, make sure you're on the Church's 10.x.x.x network, too, so your FHC computers can talk to their internal servers...

They might also just be expecting you to call them back if you needed more help. Don't know how busy they'll be what with RootsTech this week, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try!

To save some people the trip:
Before you start
Check the model of the computer. Only these models have licenses that allow the update:
Dell Optiplex 5040
Dell Optiplex 5050
Dell Optiplex 5060
Dell Optiplex 7450 AIO
Dell Optiplex 7460 AIO
Dell Optiplex 7470 AIO
Lenovo M93Z
Note: Some Dell Optiplex 7440 AIO models can be updated, but not all. The best way to verify if your 7440 can update to Windows 10 is to look for the Windows sticker on the back of the system. If the sticker has a "Pro" marking on it, then your system can be updated. The systems that do not have the "Pro" sticker will not be able to upgrade to Windows 10 as of yet.

Do not update any other models of computer. Wait for a replacement computer, which will come preinstalled with Windows 10.

If the computer is a Dell 9030 or earlier model, they cannot be upgraded to Windows 10, because the license will not allow this.

If your system is not one of the systems in the list, we cannot provide support in the event that the installation does not complete properly.
Taken at face value, this appears to be a case where FHD isn't issuing licenses - this is only for machines that already have a Win10 license but were just downgraded to Win7.

See the following Family Search latest version of the help article for the process to upgrade Family History Centre/FamilySearch Centre computers to Windows 10

https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/he ... windows-10

If you are still unable to update, you or your Stake Technology Specialist will need to get in touch with Family Search.
