Unofficial guide for YouTube Live - Part 5: Invite Others to Assist / Stream Keys

Within YouTube, you can invite others to help you manage your channel. There are 3 basic levels of assistance as follows:

• Manager - "Can add and remove others, edit everything. Can't delete channel."
• Editor - "Can edit everything. Can't add or remove others, delete videos or the channel, or enter into contracts."
• Viewer - " Can see everything. Can't edit anything."

(I did not include the Limited variants because they are essentially the same as non-limited except they can't see revenue info, which our channels won't have anyway.)

For our purposes, helpers with any of the above permission levels can view any video on your channel, including Public, Unlisted, or Private. This would allow, say, a Ward Technology Specialist to view a past event for quality purposes prior to having it deleted. The main difference I've found is a Manager can delete videos, while the other permission levels can't. It's your call if you want them to have this capability or not.

The first section of Part 5 shows the steps needed to create an invite for channel assistance. Invites remain active for 30 days.

There are NO permission levels that can create a new video, schedule a live event, or use the Control Room during a live event. These tasks rest solely on the channel Owner. This means assistants also don't have access to the saved Stream Keys, which presents a problem since they need these keys for their various streaming devices or applications.

To work around this, I created a Google Sheet with all the "Tech Team's" names, cell numbers, and email addresses in one tab and the list of Stream Keys in another tab. I then shared this sheet (read-only) with the Technology Team. This makes it easy for a team member to copy and paste a key into their streaming application or device.

The last 2 pages in Part 5 show how I organized the information in the Sheet. Creating and sharing a Google Sheet is beyond the scope of this tutorial. There is ample help online if you need assistance.

Nice job putting this doc together. It has been very helpful.

I have been using my personal YouTube account for testing and this feature seems to require a "brand account" or one related to a business at setup time. Right? My Stake already has a YouTube account setup by someone else. Getting access to it has proven to be a challenge.

I don't think so. I can see the option to invite others using my personal YT account, but I haven't tried it. I found the email addresses entered have to be linked to a Google account or the invite will fail.

My Stake already has a YouTube account setup by someone else. Getting access to it has proven to be a challenge.

You're not yet at the "how to use the stream key portion", but just two tidbits that I ran into:

1) In OBS, if you leave a trailing space after the stream key, OBS won't work. I used to use the same exact method you described, a spreadsheet where they could just copy and paste in their stream key, and I had an assistant goof by adding in that extra space.

2) OBS does have the option of profiles. That way the stream keys don't have to be re-entered each week. An assistant could either select a profile to switch to the correct one, or the desktop could just have multiple desktop shortcuts which launch OBS into the correct profile via a command line argument.

Thank you Mikerowaved! This gave me some confidence to get our setup running through Youtube. We had our first 3 sacrament meetings successfully broadcast yesterday from the stake building. All we are using is the Vidiu teradek provided by the church, the camera installed in the stake center 10 years ago and Youtube. Such an easy, sustainable setup for us. Thanks again!
