Unable to download videos anymore

#1

Post by p.harrington »

Hello, I am using Gospel Library for Windows and recently there has been a change that prevents downloading media.

To download media this is what I did before:
  • Go to the lesson for this week
  • Click on the Old Testament Story link in the lesson
  • While in the Old Testament Story, click on the Media tab
  • Click on the movie dropdown, then choose 720p
  • After choosing a resolution, the download arrow is active, click on the arrow to download the video for offline playing
The problem is that now the only resolution available is 1080p and that does not activate a download arrow. If I go fullscreen there is a download arrow but the context is for the text of the story, not the video.

Downloading videos should not be as hard as the procedure I detailed above, but now it's completely broken and I have to resort to going to the website to cache videos for offline use.

I don't know if all meetinghouses are similarly affected, but since the start of the COVID era, Wifi was disabled and has not returned, so I have to cache lessons offline before Sunday or I have to tether my phone ($$$).

Unless WiFi is disabled so that sacrament meetings can be webcast, I do not know why it would have gone away. You might check with your technology specialist and see if that is the case.

Yes, it was disabled for the webcasts, but was not enabled when the webcasts stopped.

OK, this problem gets weirder and weirder.

GLW hasn't been updated since Oct 2021, so this issue is something to do with a catalog manifest and/or bugs in GLW.

I was able to download a video, but only by doing this:
- Go to Old Testament Stories
- Click on the first story
- Click on Media tab
- Click on the movie icon, 3 resolutions are now listed: 1080p, 720p, and 360p
- Choose 720p
- A small rectangular window shows up in the upper left of the page (this is the video playback viewport, definitely buggy how this works)
- Navigate to the desired story while leaving the viewport open
- Click on the Media tab
- Choose 720p from the movie icon (resolution) dropdown menu
- Click on the download arrow and choose "Download"

Now it lets you download

I really don't know what "changed" to allow this to work, I just discovered it by comparing my 2 windows devices where one "worked" suddenly and I replicated the process on the other one to download the videos.

That's a manual setting controlled locally. If the webcasts have stopped - even for the shut-ins, someone probably needs to remind the stake technology specialist that the Wi-Fi is off.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

Are you on the Windows Gospel Library beta? I know they've made some changes to media playback recently, but it might only be in the beta so far.

New version in production today. It includes a new way to download videos and a management system for them. Whenever you are on any page that has content you can either click the play/download button that appears on the right hand side or choose the media tab from the top.
