Ward Pianist/Organist calling replaced?

#1

Post by jgoggan »

I can't seem to find a Ward Pianist/Organist calling any more. Has this been replaced with "Accompanist"? Under the Music section, there is a "Priesthood Pianist or Organist", but not "Ward Pianist or Organist" calling.

We literally called a Ward Organist today -- and when I went to put them in, I realized that the calling does not appear to exist in the standard callings any more. Should it have been Accompanist? It has been a long time since we've made such a call, so I have no idea how long it has been. But when I search online, I see "Ward Pianist or Organist" mentioned all over the place -- but don't see it in the list of standard callings.

Thanks!

Just for more information... I do find this on the official site: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/cal ... c-callings

...but it appears to be outdated. It lists "Ward Organist or Pianist" as a calling, but then it also references "Chapter 14 of Handbook 2", which, of course, is out of date.

See Section 19.4.3.2 of the General Handbook, hopefully that will answer your question.

Thanks for the pointer. I'm always amazed when I go back to the Handbook, at details I didn't remember being there. Of course given the nature of online docs, it may be that it's new info, but I'm sure sometimes it's been there for a few years and I just wasn't aware. It's good to see how the current music callings are organized and described.

Three posts that briefly appeared before this one have been removed from the topic. They did not relate specifically to the subject at hand and they included some misunderstanding and frustration.

The last post included an abbreviation that caused some unintended results, triggered a report, and induced a lively discussion among the moderators concerning how best to maintain the spirit of the Code of Conduct that has served this forum so well over the years.

The moderators are pleased to note that the three posts resolved themselves amicably and included an apology for the misunderstanding. The posts also give an opportunity for a few reminders that will make our job as voluntary moderators a little bit easier.

The Code of Conduct encourages, among other things, these two behaviors:

"Follow the Golden Rule -- Everyone enjoys being treated with respect."

"When in doubt, don't post it. Take a deep breath, check your facts, etc. It's better to wait if you are unsure of something or too frustrated to think clearly."

It is easy to misunderstand or even become offended. It is important that we are careful in what we post and that we always assume a positive intent when we read the posts of others.

In the moment, this is not always easy to do. We all come from different backgrounds and with different experiences and expectations that often are not met.

When frustrations run high, it is helpful to remember that the Forum is not a place to vent them. Sharing problems is fine. The Forum is the place to suggest any solutions we may have found based on our experience that will help others along the path to successfully fulfilling our callings.

We are all users here. Ultimately, there are many things over which we have no control at all, which is delightfully frustrating in and of itself.

Thank you for joining us in this adventure and for your positive contributions to the Forum.

Sorry. I reacted too quickly indeed. Thanks for cleaning things up.

For those that stumble across this in the future... "Ward Pianist or Organist" is out/old and "Ward Accompanist" is in/current. (And a bunch of pages on the official website that are not the Handbook itself still have the old/outdated information.)
