Airplay on Samsung Smart TVs - keep it working

#1

Post by kreeve »

Looking for someone who is using Airplay on their meetinghouse Samsung smart TV and able to keep it connected to Liahona network?

The ipad/android tablet savvy RS instructors want to cast from their devices. Airplay for iOS and Mac devices is built into the Samsung TV, but it appears Airplay requires the TV and casting device be connected to the same wifi network. Worked great when I tested it, I was able to connect the Samsung Smart TV to the Liahona and accept the Liahona portal page from the TV browser.

Today it will not work. Even after reseting the network connection on the TV the Liahona portal page never loads when going to the browser, and so Airplay does not work at all. .The TV does connect to Liahona but does not get internet . Thus it is not getting past the portal page. I can not bring it up on the TVs built in browser, but I could the other day. I have powered down TV (unplug from wall) etc. I have hacked at it for a couple of hours tonight and getting nowhere.

Has anyone had success getting airplay to work consistently on the Liahona network with a Samsung Smart TV?

Otherwise it is back to HDMI cables and handful of adapters for all the devices.

Ask the stake technology specialist to add the TV to the nosplash group in Church Network Manager (previously known as Technology Manager). That will bypass the splashscreen when it connects to Liahona.

Dealing with the splash screen should only be needed if the TV needs to talk to the internet. If the traffic is strictly between devices on the network, that shouldn't be needed.

Note that the TV will have to be on and obtained an IP from the network for the STS to add it to the NoSplash policy. He may need help in identifying the device.

Ya it appears from my experience and from reading online that in order for airplay to work the devices have to be on the same network.

Thanks for responding and for your suggestion.

Thank you for this. I did not know it was possible. I will reach out to the Stake Technology specialists and try this out. Thank you!

We have been using our LG monitors for media rich sharing for over a year now. More people are becoming and enjoying the benefits of wirelessly attaching and sharing.
We use the splash screen bypass for the TV/ROKU devices. We had to do this as the TV were not allowed to communicate on local network without this bypass.
Iphones, MAC, Win10/11 computers can all attach natively. Android is having some issues where you have to download a 3rd party app. Android is wanting to push Chromecast. Please investigate AIRPLAY and MIRACAST .

How wireless is being used:
1. Prelude music before Sunday School
2. Church Videos
3. Quotes for people to read and interact versus paper
4. Two of our instructors create rich content via powerpoint and it is fantastic to attend their classes. They have become very comfortable and confident using it.

The method is currently being shared via word of mouth, but I plan to add a QR code sticker on each TV to link to my instructions/video for whomever wants to wirelessly share. I should finish those this month.

One failure mode is that I suspect youth or others will jokingly try to broadcast to disrupt classes. This can be somewhat controlled by requiring a 4 digit code authentication each time you connect.

Enjoy

Indeed, You need to stay connected on the same wifi network to be able to cast to your Samsung TV wth Airplay but I find this guide - https://smarttvassist.com/how-to-cast-to-samsung-tv/ useful for the same purpose of casting to the Samsung TV with some very useful alternative methods. Hope it helps, it did solve my 'casting to samsung tv' headache for sure.

Over the years in a school district setting, Airplay, ChromeCast, and just about anything else we tried to use to Cast to Tvs would always fail to connect. Near as we could determine, these devices all wanted to "phone home" on specialized ports that weren't allowed. We quit trying after messing with the firewall and content filters with no happiness as a result.
I'm just curious, has ANYONE been able to use SmartCast or any Cast device/app that works on these Smart Tvs reliably and consistently on demand?

As a missionary, Yes. We normally have district, zone and mission councils using these types of TVs. We do use Samsung phones with Smart Cast but any device with Miracast should work. If not, I've seen bishoprics bring in Apple TVs to do the same thing.

Airplay works flawlessly in our building. For those using Android, it is hit/miss depending on the Android type. Samsung phones generally share just fine.

We also have old projectors where we buy $20 Roku to also enable airplay.
