Foreign Tithing Declaration

#1

Post by Reece441 »

There is a member who is from Canada but lived abroad in Costa Rica for some time. While abroad, this member was paying tithing to the church there. The member is now back in Canada and is in the process of doing taxes. The member is wanting to know if they can have some sort of official tax document from the church that allows the member to report donations made in Costa Rica to reduce the amount of taxes paid in Canada.

Is the church able to produce such a document from tithing paid to the church in Costa Rica? (The is also concern that the Canadian Government does not acknowledge charitable donations made outside of Canada, not sure if this is true)

Assuming the member paid either online or through their unit and their donations were linked to their church account with their MRN recorded in that account, then a statement should be available online. Has the member checked their online donor statements at the Donations webpage? If there is nothing there, and unless someone can speak from experience, the answers to these questions would most likely best asked of the support people at the Global Services Department (GSD). If they don't have the answers they most certainly can direct you to the church department that does have the answers.

If their donations were not connected to their church account but rather recorded under a nonmember account at the local unit then they will have to contact that unit's clerk to get a statement of those donations.
