Mobile vs Desktop for M-Clerks

These days, can a membership clerk do everything on a mobile device or is a desktop computer required for some things? Like create a new member record, record a civil marriage date, print a blessing or ordination certificate etc?

I'd think you'd want a larger screen than what a mobile device gives you.

But the church provides the computer in the clerk's office. The ward doesn't go out and buy a new one.

All membership record keeping can be done on a mobile device. A majority of member record keeping functions requires using Leader and Clerk Resources, and therefore a web browser. There are a few features found in Member Tools. The limitations of a small screen makes some tasks more challenging, but possible.

The reason I use my laptop more often instead of my smart phone is the larger screen allows me to see more at once as well as being able to have multiple tabs open to allow quicker reference to multiple pages at once. The big challenge in using a smart phone is printing. While printing itself is not a problem, it is getting a print preview that will show exactly how the print job will actually look. This is easily done on a larger screen and not so much on a small mobile screen.

I use my smart phone, my laptop, or clerk computer depending on the task or even the situation in which I find myself when accomplishing membership records tasks. Time is a distinguishing factor in work output when using a smart phone versus a bigger screen desktop or even a laptop. I can accomplish most tasks significantly faster on a larger screen. Conversely, the time advantage of a smart phone for those few things found in Member Tools beats the big screen devices. Somethings like moving in membership records or taking and recording sacrament meeting attendance beats the laptop. Having the phone on hand as you meet new move-ins just before sacrament meeting and getting their information in the phone on the spot is a breeze. The phone also excels in getting membership information to unit leaders on the spot for many situations.

I find an iPad works great. I'm a ward clerk and just carry my iPad with me at church all the time. I have full access to both Member Tools and LCR in a large enough screen for my 70+ year old eyes to be comfortable.
