Non-Taxable Income Benefits

#1

Post by Hilohi »

During the pandemic, our ward helped a member pay his mortgage. The state recently sent him a letter saying "We need the following documentation to verify the funding sources and amounts used to meet your mortgage obligation and other living expenses during the 2020 tax year." and then the letter asks for a "Copy of non-taxable income benefits. (disability/workman's compensation or SSA-1099 statement of benefits)." Basically, we need to provide documentation to the state to show that we helped him pay his mortgage. Does anyone know how we should handle this?

I would call Church Headquarters. You may need to be put in touch with legal.

Tax laws are complicated and this needs to be done right, not guessed at.

Edit: it would be interesting to hear how this plays out. There may be a reason for the advice to use for non-cash assistance when assisting members.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.
