Formatting Google Sheets for Seminary

#1

Post by rgrich »

Greetings,

I'm trying to assist a seminary teacher with the formatting of an attendance sheet. I'd like the title to appear on each page as it's printed. But everything I've tried has not worked. Anyone out there an expert on formatting Goggle Sheets? I've illustrated my frustration with a video you can see. Here's the link to my Goggle Drive.

It's just a detail, and we can clearly proceed without getting this corrected, but I'd really like to know what I was doing wrong. Thanks in advance!

Just a thought: Merge the cells in that row so the title doesn't have to "step over" any of the cells.

You might also see if you're using the most current version of the program (Looks like LibreOffice.) as it might be a bug that's been fixed.

Thanks, I wondered about that too. However the program tells me that I can't freeze a merged cell. It stops you before you can even try. But I love the thinking. Any other ideas?

I'd suggest looking into moving the title into the header as it's not really part of the table itself. . I don't have LibreOffice on this machine, but in Excel, I can find it during the Print Preview.

Would you share the link to the spreadsheet? I am not able to recreate the issue.

If you merge cells horizontally to spread your title out over several cells (like B1 to H1), you can freeze rows containing those merged cells.

The problems is when you try to freeze columns (like A and B). Since it can't freeze part of a cell (the merged cells from B1 to H1 now represent one cell), it slaps your hand and says (rightfully so) that it can't do that. That also applies when to trying to merge cells that span over an existing freeze (as you found out).

The only way I see to do this is what russellhltn suggested. Delete the first row completely, and when you go to print, select Headers & footers, then EDIT CUSTOM FIELDS. Place your title "SEMINARY ATTENDANCE FALL 2024" on the top-left or top-center and any other tidbits, like date, time, page #, etc. and print it.
