These latest posts make me very encouraged. I like the idea of the firewall being fully in charge of the authentication.

In any case, has anyone else with Macs or other Apple hardware had trouble with the new firewalls? I've had several Apple hardware owners complain that the DHCP server in the new firewall won't issue them an address (iphones, ipads, laptops all have seen the issue). I saw the same thing on my Mac. Any suggestions as to what to try as it's acting like the DHCP server just does not like some Apple clients. For reference my ipod touch v3 has no problems. Very odd.

We've had no problems with the Cisco PIX and the ASA5505, and the 881 with at least an iPhone.... can't say on iPad or MAC, but haven't heard anything either way

Filter and FaceBook.com

We have not had any challenges with the Cisco PIX 501, ASA 5505, or the 881W with an iPhone, iPad, Android smart phones or tablets

FaceBook.com is the only application issue we have found with IE 8 behind a Cisco 881W firewall with a default filter, (for a non FHC meetinghouse) and FaceBook.com will NOT work on a windows desktop, it only present some text stuff, on the iPhone FaceBook app, it says the Internet is not available. This issue was given to support late Mar 2011

Note: the Cisco 881W firewall at a Family History Center (FHC) meetinghouse (with FHC filter), and FaceBook.com works great on a desktop, iPhone or iPad ...

Yes, some staff of the LDS Church Education System (CES) use FaceBook.com for communications with their class members (etc.)
Thanks,

Mac OS 10.6.7 has changes to the drivers and firmware on the wireless cards on Mac Book Pros and we have seen problems with wireless in many places...not just meetinghouses. The brand new Mac Book Pros (with Thunderbolt) haven't had any problems that we have seen yet.

I'm looking at the possibility of replacing a Pix 501, that we believe has run to the end of it's life. Now I'm looking at keeping the current Aironet 1200 that we have in the building and from what I'm reading, it still will work. am I correct?

Second this meeting you are talking about, when did it happen and was it advertised? Will future meetings like this be advertized? Because this sounded like a meeting that I, as stake technology specialist, would have love to be in. Also I assume that someone is working on a white paper about the changes, so that we can brief and inform the stake presidency of the changes so that we can set a policy of usage in the stake. Also, i would assume that the wireless access points would still have the current SSID and passcode to get a wireless connection.

With me making changes in two of my buildings because of "old" equipment, this is information that I will need to know.

thanks for the information

When it was held varied by region, but in my case the FM group emailed the Stake Presidency/Stake Clerk (one or the other) and the Stake Clerk invited me to attend.

The meetings were held on a regional basis and coordinated by the FM Group. Ask your PFR specialist to ask the FM Group if the meeting in your area has already been held and, if so, who attended. You will be able to get updates from that person.

lajackson, thanks for the reply.

Now, tonight I got confirmation that one of my PIX 501 is toast. We are replacing it with an 881W as soon as it arrives and I can scheduled to get to the building which is 40 minutes from my home.

Now the building has one WAP and it is an Aironet 1234, I think. I don't have the exact model with me. I expect that it will work with the new 881W without doing any reconfiguration. Am I correct? Or is there some reconfiguration that will need to be done to the Aironet to get it to work with the 881W?

Any help with it would be greatly appreciated. I plan on install the 1041N with the 881W at one of my other buildings, just to bring them up to date as my power converters on the Aironets are starting to die on me.

Thanks for the help

Ok, still having troubles with the DHCP server in the 881s. No Mac I've tried can communicate with the 881s DHCP server (at least they fail to get an IP address). Ipod, Ipad, Iphone all work fine. I also have found the same issue with at least one HP laptop. Salt Lake blamed the issue on the Mac which digging around on the net seemed valid given that the recent OSX releases had known issues. However, now that HP laptop has the same issue. Has anyone else experienced this? Never had any problems with the previous firewalls.

The current Aironet 1234 will not function with the new 881W after it is installed, because it has a static IP Address in your old Pix 501 IP range. If you reset the WAP to factory defaults it may automatically configure, I would call into the GSD before heading out to verify. Also, if at all possible, I would advise that you do this during the day. It is unfortunate that the Night/Weekend staff of the GSD aren't as well equipped to handle out-of-the-norm situations, if you have anything go wrong, you'll want the day-time shift of the GSD there to help (or you may be making another trip).
