Wireless Firewall
Dear friends,
We have just activated on of the firewalls in our stake. However, how can we turn the firewall wireless on as well as change its name identification?
Thanks

It will turn on automatically once everything is complete. It may take several minutes. You have no control over it's ID. It's set by the church servers.

If this is a recent installation then the router/firewall/wireless device is a Cisco 881W. Once activated the device is remotely managed from theGlobal Service Center (GSC). The SSID is standardized throughout the Church and cannot be changed. For more information see the wiki article Wireless networking (meetinghouse).

LDSaccess is now the Church standard SSID. Prior to the FM Group updating the wireless equipment in our buildings we used our own SSID, but when the FM Group installs the equipment it is standardized using LDSaccess. I have read that the STS should be allowed to change the passcode, but I haven't seen any information on how to change it.

The STS cannot change it directly. He has to contact the GSC to have it changed. It is important that the STS is acting on direction from the stake president to do this. Some have reported it is quite difficult to convince the GSC technicians to make the change. Some have reported that they will not change it and state it is an unchangeable standard configuration.jsfriedman wrote:I have read that the STS should be allowed to change the passcode, but I haven't seen any information on how to change it.

Our recent setup has a SSID of LDSA and a WEP based password instead of the standard one. It was setup this way by the contractor the FM group paid. Our stake center also has a different SSID too.
I inquired about why it wasn't standard, but the FM group said it would require more money to change anything which they didn't want to spend. They said it hasn't been a problem so it will stay that way.
So if your stake president wants the wireless to be unknown to the general membership he could state who is to have access and dictate that in a letter on official letterhead. The STS could forward that to the GSC department as an incentive to escalate the issue in an official way to someone who can make/authorize the change.
Another option is for the stake president to authorize the FM group to hire a contractor to configure the equipment themselves versus the standard configuration.

Sounds like they went with non-church issued equipment. That was acceptable at one time, but now for new installs.rbeede wrote:Our recent setup has a SSID of LDSA and a WEP based password instead of the standard one. It was setup this way by the contractor the FM group paid.

I'd think most FM groups would cite a policy and and say "no".

Actually it is an ASA with a 1041n so it is the standard equipment. The install was done in November of last year.RussellHltn wrote:Sounds like they went with non-church issued equipment. That was acceptable at one time, but now for new installs.
At which point the stake president would have to use stake funds instead. The choice of who has access and what level of filtering is up to the stake president.RussellHltn wrote: I'd think most FM groups would cite a policy and and say "no".

The question of funding is a minor issue, IMO. Yes, the stake president gets to choose who has access, but the firewall is managed by the GSC. The stake president can ask the GSC to change the filtering level (typically through the STS), but he doesn't have authority to simply take over the configuration of the firewall and eliminate the GSC from having any ability to manage the firewall. If he doesn't work through the GSC, the only option is to reset the firewall to factory defaults and then script it yourself, which will remove the standard means of access the GSC uses. That's a very bad idea.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.
