New move-ins automatically assigned to CTR 5A

Hi everyone. For some reason my ward MLS is set up to automatically assign every new move-in (regardless of age) to our CTR 5A class. At one point in time our class roll had over 70 members on it, all ranging from age 0 to 80. I've looked everywhere for a way to change this, to no success. Does anyone know a way to change which classes new members are automatically assigned to?

Specifically, your situation is one where the Rules for the class are not set up correctly (they probably weren't specified at all), so all ward members match the rules for that class. So you'll need to follow the procedure for Changing class rules, which is not at all obvious (but the wiki article gives you step-by-step instructions).

From the name of the class it appears you have more than one CTR 5 class. Whoever created the second CTR 5 class did not use the method described in the Splitting classes section of the wiki article Classes. Instead they added a second class, named it CTR 5A, and failed to set the rules for the class. This essentially places every member moving into the ward on the CTR 5A class rolls.

Since every child moving into the ward who is CTR 5 eligible is not appearing on the CTR 5B class rolls, one of two situations may be occurring for that class. The most likely situation is that the original CTR 5 class was renamed CTR 5B and the rules for that class are properly set. The second, and more unlikely, situation is that the CTR 5B class rules are set so that nobody qualifies and therefore names have to be manually added.

The Changing class rules section of the wiki article explains that you cannot change the class rules once the class is created and populated. For your situation your best course of action is to note the names of the children who should be in the CTR 5A class and then remove the class and then re-add it with the rules properly set. You will then have to manually add each child to the class.

Assuming the CTR 5B class rules are properly set, you have two choices of methods on how you set the rules for the CTR 5A class. The first method is to set the rules identical to the rules for the CTR 5B class. This is the same result you would have gotten had the class been originally split using the method described in the Splitting classes section of the wiki article.

The second method is to set the CTR 5A class rules so that nobody qualifies. Setting the minimum age to 200 would do this. When new children move-in who meet the class rules for CTR 5 they will, in your case, appear on the CTR 5B roles. Manually remove them from CTR 5B and, when prompted during the removal process, select CTR 5A as the destination class.

When there are split classes there will always be a need to manually adjust class rosters regardless of which of the methods used to split or set class rules. I cannot think of a way the programmers could change MLS to better accommodate assignment of members to split classes.
