Because the Product Manager over Clerk Computers said so. If you believe that is not sufficient, I suggest you contact Brian.

I actually do believe that isn't sufficient. What if I'm an STS that doesn't review the broadcasts? The same tech broadcast Brian Suggested that an Image was available for updating a clerk computer to Windows 7 (if it had Win7 licensing, but was installed with WinXP) - this was wrong, or he misspoke. What if he was also wrong about Remote Access? I'm truly not trying to be argumentative - and as stated before, I have uninstalled remote access everywhere I have seen it in our stake (which was only 1 place). I abide by and enforce this in my stake, but it is still not a very solid case when someone examines it.

How so? Was this based on what first level support has said?

This was my experience, after the broadcast (the next day) I called the GSC to obtain the DVD mentioned, I was put through to Brian who indicated it was a mistake and not available.

If it isn't official policy, it should be. I fully agree that remote access is EXTREMELY useful, even for those who have quick access to the computer. However, how many wards/stakes have someone qualified to perform the installation? How many programs are truly secure, vs how many offer the possibility of remote access but are not secure? What happens when the program is put on properly, but a user changes the passwords? Or leaves the computer off? Or the remote access program doesn't receive security updates?

What about MLS security? How many MLS users have poor passwords? Those users have a bit of extra security in that the computer must be accessed locally, and the building is usually locked. Remote access removes that restriction, making it potentially easier to hack into MLS.

I don't know the official policy, but as a computer specialist, I agree remote access should not be allowed until they come up with a way to do it properly. It sounds like the chosen method will be through lds.org. I fully sympathize with those who must travel for some time to reach the computer, but I would also remind them of past years when there was no computer at all. Be grateful for your blessings and be patient while things get even better.
