OPEE - yes, it is personal and I agree with you that they could also update the personal address and phone number information in CDOL from MLS and then HQ would only need to updated the leader's work information

Add local unit details to Chuchwide Events on calendar

#83

Post by mprusse »

For example, on March 29, 2008 there is a General Young Women Meeting broadcast put on all LUWS calendars by HQ. It would be very helpful to add details to that calendar entry that are specific to our local unit/stake such as viewing location, alternate times, etc. As of now I believe the only way to do this is to create a totally separate calendar entry for the same event with the details attached.

I second the motion. That's caused some confusion in our stake when a church-wide event is put on the calender with MST/MDT instead of local time.

But there's one detail: in the case of YM/RS Meeting, we delay it until Sunday. So we'd like the ability to move it to an alternate viewing date. However, even the ability to put in the notes the fact that it will be shown the next day would be a big help.

This is similar to the request I made at http://tech.lds.org/forum/showpost.php? ... stcount=68

Alan_Brown wrote:When ward members view the LUWS calendar, they see the ward calendar merged with the stake calendar and the Church calendar. This works okay, but very often we end up with duplicated events because there is no ability to override events from a higher level.

Let me illustrate with some examples. The Church calendar has a Worldwide Leadership Training Broadcast on February 9. However, there is no time specified (since it is shown at 8 different times during the day, and stakes are in a variety of time zones). For my stake, we have chosen to show that broadcast at 9:00am MST, so I created a stake calendar event to supply that information. But now both events show up on the stake and ward calendars. If the stake could somehow override the Church event, then we wouldn't have this duplication.

The same thing happens (even more often) between wards and the stake. The stake creates an event for Men's Basketball on Saturday morning 8:00am-noon. But Anytown 1st Ward has their game at 10:00am and so they create an event for that time to show up on their ward calendar, but the stake event still shows up. I know that the Anytown 1st Ward web site administrator can send a message to the Anytown Stake web site administrator, who can then uncheck the Anytown 1st Ward from the stake event so that the stake event will not get pushed down to the ward calendar, but that is a hassle. Similar issues occur with any sports events and often with welfare assignments where responsibilities are parceled out to specific wards.

Perhaps this concept was envisioned by other posters with the comments about layering, but I thought it was worth mentioning specifically. If a ward or stake could even just have the option to make an event from the stake or Church hidden, it would allow administrators to avoid this duplication.

Another issue arises when Stake Calendar Admins are not as active at updating their calendar as are the Ward admins. Several times stake activities (youth dances, sports, etc) have been rescheduled but the stake calendar does not get updated. If the Ward Calendar Admin could control the display of stake items then those could be removed. As things stand now I have to post a SECOND item on our calendar to note that something is canceled.

In that situation I think it would be better to light a fire under the stake admin. Being able to give feedback on a specific item would help. If you start allowing the ward admin to alter the stake events pushed down to the ward you open the door to all kinds of problems.

Perhaps allow the ward admin to add some notes to the description for things like carpooling, ward assignments, etc.

Of course that continues to be the theoretically-ideal and preferred method.

Not sure I see the problems? I suppose a malicious Ward Admin could purposefully sabotage an event, but I hope that would be highly unlikely. I only see this feature being used in a case where the Stake calendar is not kept as up-to-date as the Ward calendar. Perhaps if a Stake Admin makes an update to a Stake event, it would override ward-level suppression?

This issue only comes up a few times a year, so it's probably not worth a ton of programming effort. But it is on my "wish list" as the thread title requests. :+)

"Sabotage" is an overly strong word, but altering the event to the point that it's incorrect. Perhaps based on incorrect information.

But how would you know it was updated? Last editor wins? It doesn't avoid the problem I've pointed out.

The bigger issue is one of responsibility. If ward admins can change things, then can the stake admin be held responsible?

I guess from my "active ward admin" perspective I would agree that whoever posts last, wins. As a ward admin I would never supercede a stake post without good cause.

But I completely agree this would be a band-aid fix to something that shouldn't even have to be addressed, at least not in a perfect world. :+)
