I've never actually seen a case where there is an Assistant Ward Clerk who is not designated as the Membership or Finance Clerk. Not sure what exactly they would do, unless they serve as a substitute for a Ward Clerk or Membership or Financial Clerk who travels a lot. If not that, there doesn't seem to be much handbook guidance in what their duties would be, and thus what access they would need.

I've seen it on several occasions:
  • When an assistant clerk's main role is historical or statistical, but there is no designated assignment for that (that can happen when there are lots of clerks in a ward);
  • When they do a variety of tasks, including helping any of the other clerks;
  • When there's only one assistant who does membership, financial, and other tasks (in this case they might be given multiple standard callings, but right now an assistant clerk can do everything online that a membership clerk can do and more than a financial clerk can do).
But as for the handbook, it's assistant clerks that are discussed, mostly in general terms. It doesn't really say anything about membership clerks. Even for finances, the references are to a "clerk assigned to finances." That's just one of the various assignments an assistant clerk can have, and an assistant clerk can have multiple assignments.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

I was called and set apart as an "Assitant Ward Clerk - Finance". However do to having past experence as a Ward Clerk I have extensive knowledge that our current Ward Clerk does not have. Hence he relies on me for many things, just like many other clerks whos main responsibility is finances.

To enable me to have access to the internet resources, we flaged my postion in MLS both as "Assistant Ward Clerk" as well as "Assistant Ward Clerk-Finance". We did not have to ask for permission as we (as Clerks) control who has what rights in MLS. Our Bishop is to busy to have to worry who has what rights in MLS, so he has deligated this down to us.

Thank for the responses. That makes sens now as I was the membership clerk but changed to the finance clerk. The clerk must have gone in and made the change around that time.
