I recall when I became a deacon back around.. 1989. We would stay in the front along with those who blessed the Sacrament, staying at the sacrament table for the remainder of Sacrament meeting. It was only like that for a few months, and then it was announced that something had changed policy wise (not sure Stake or Church) and that the young men would be allowed to "sit with their families" once they were released to do so by whomever was conducting the meeting. It has been like that in the other wards I have been in since.
