I did try the things listed in there link. As well as several other links. Nothing seems to work. I called global services and spoke to them. They say they don't support Member tools. But the kind rep offered another solution, ensuring the app has no restrictions on background data in the app settings. Still no luck. Apparently the official method to get help with the app is to use the in app feedback.. which doesn't work when it won't open/sync due to the "service unavailable" error message.

The app store indicates support can be had from membertools @ churchofjesuschrist.org.
