Conference got me thinking about my missionary companions. Several were from Central American countries. Is there a way to look them up in MLS? or CHQ?
Or is it feasible to gain access to the ward/stake directories in my mission?

There are no lookup capabilities in MLS outside your ward or stake. And the other options you mentioned are not available either -- the Church is concerned about privacy and so restricts access to member lists to your local stake.
However, this question has been posed before, and some suggestions are listed in the thread Finding friends.

Believe it or not, Facebook has been very valuable to me for this. There are FB groups created covering my mission (and even my specific mission presidents).
There is a cascade effect in FB - when you find one old missionary companion, generally they are connected to another, and another, and... (sounds like a Faberge shampoo commercial!)
