Bitmaps

I believe Mollie mentioned she was going to try to get some Hebrew handwriting article up. I was looking for it and found:
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Jewish ... _Languages

I am guessing this is not the one she was talking about. Any guesses when it will be available if my guess is correct?

I found this article was referencing BMPs. To view them, you have to click on the link and then click again. I felt this was not very friendly, so I downloaded the BMPs, converted them to JPGs, uploaded them, and changed the page to reference the JPGs. Should the BMPs be deleted?

Okay, did I just fork on the first entry of a thread?

For the fun of it, I found only the following three articles that reference a ".BMP". I changed them all like I did the original article of this thread and added some more information.
  1. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Hambur ... nger_Lists
    1. I thought figure 1 was missing, but fixed that. I also fixed all tables.
  2. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Scotla ... sters_(OPR)
    1. Both links to the BMPs were messed up because of spaces in the name.
  3. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Germany_Handwriting
    1. The BMP was not only messed up, but pointing to the old Wiki. The other link to a PDF was also messed up. See forked thread on PDFs.
Ooops, I just found four more pages. I will take a look at these later. If I want to get up to the meeting, I have better stop. Once these are taken care of (current snapshop), none of the BMPs will be referenced and I think can be deleted.

Is there a way I can change the name of this thread to "Bitmaps"?

I fixed the following two articles:
  1. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Greece ... C_Personal
  2. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/A_Guide_to_Research
    1. Fixed the headings to come closer to the actual guide
    2. Found the "Research Guide Chart2" image was missing, so I created one that is close. It is not a perfect match, so if someone wants to upload the good one, that is fine.
    3. Fixed the record search table, specifically the heading.
I stopped because Something seems broken in the Wiki!!!

Not that I know of, but moderators can rename threads -- and I did.

Thanks for the article name change, it made it clear what the thread was discussing.

Now I have a little more on bitmaps for those who may not be aware of what they are or why they are still around.

I first encountered .bmp files when the first Macs came out. Went to a computer store to try one out once I saw the commercial and even the Chicago typeface which was default for those was displayed in bitmap form.

But soon after, it was found these files were required larger memory to hold and display them, and so because hard drives only had a few megs of memory then they had to come up with other formats that were more compressed. Enter Tiff, jpeg, and especially gif for a time.

Now with loads of memory, you are now seeing more jpegs, and that seems to be an accepted general use standard for posting graphical files, although I do see some of the others. This is actually one of the first postings about bitmap files that I have seen in a number of years anywhere on the net.

Okay, I have converted all of the BMPs to JPGs, uploaded them, and changed all of the articles that referenced the BMPs. Now, all of the BMPs are not referenced. Can we delete them? It would seem like a great idea to remove BMPs out of the list of acceptable files to upload. Can this be done? What other files are allowed?

Thank you. I still see BMPs in the Wiki and have re-started this thread in the newer forum.
