Yes, the Church has been replacing Windows XP computers in meetinghouses for over 3 years now. The Windows XP replacements are being accelerated this year. Without letting the cart get before the horse, I am working with various departments within the Church to cascade Windows XP machines for Windows 7 machines.

I know used computers are cascaded to FHCs, but I can't remember receiving any cascaded computers for clerk's offices. Our FM typically purchases new computers for clerk's offices. They will not purchase new computers until the existing clerk's computers are at least five years old, unless of course they receive additional budget funds to purchase new computers sooner.

I'd appreciate an update when it happens. We have seven Optiplex 740 running XP in my stake. Six of them reached their 5th birthday last year. The last word I got (indirectly) is that they're budgeted for replacement next year.

You will be notified in the not too distant future. Communications are being prepared for all relevant parties, including Facilities Managers and Stake Technology Specialists.

Would the Church consider moving to versions of Linux to support the services needed. There are several version that are exceptional for the current systems, support java (intern MLS) and save funds?

I really doubt it. This question has been posed many, many times on the forum. The Church is very aware of costs, so I'm confident this option has been considered. It's possible (but not certain, given the way Microsoft works deals with hardware manufacturers) that the Church might save a bit of money on the initial purchase, but there are many other costs related to support that are more hidden, but very real. All in all, I'm confident that the Church is making a well-considered decision in this regard.

If you want to discuss the issue in more detail, find one of those existing discussions and add to it, or start a new discussion. Let's keep this discussion focused on Windows XP end-of-life issues.

Please see my post here:

If your computers can run Windows 7, you need to submit an order form signed by the stake president to request a Windows 7 FHC image, and indicate how many licenses you need.

If your computer cannot run Windows 7, you need to submit the same form indicating the make and model of each computer that needs to be replaced by a cascaded computer.

It is easy to do, although the process is somewhat slow, given the high demand this year.

The first question is this an official FHC? If not, then it's the responsibility of the sponsoring unit.

Family History is working on cascading used computers to replace them, but that's dependent on the FHC Director filing reports and the proper inventory software running on the computers.

I absolutely agree, Russell. Every time I call Family History Center Support for help, they tell me which of the four FHC directors in my stake is not submitting her monthly report. What can I do about that? I send them an e-mail, and tell them to be more faithful in submitting those reports.

The form I mentioned requires the FHC unit number, so it can only be used for official FHCs.
