Returning of all microfilms from FHC's

#1

Post by Frb.Henrik »

Hello, an order from "Salt Lake City" should state that all the microfilms from the FHC's shall be returned, in Denmark we shall send the films to Frankfurt, Germany.

Does anyone know WHY?
We have guests that travel 2-3 hours each way to check microfilms, that are not available as digital images, not even from the FHC computers..
Also a collection was bought via funds from the royal founding, so a researcher could do the research in our center etc, as well as many people has paid extra so the films would always be available for them..

Is the idea to close down the FHC's? The FamilySearch Community is of course great, but cannot provide help scanning old documents and familyphotos, does not have resources for lengthly help etc.. Also the FHC's have local knowledge and might speak local languages (not all outside USA speak (us)English)

sorry for letting the steam out, but it seems frustrating not seeing a good reason for the subject,

If they're not already digitized, my guess is that they want the microfilms to be gathered so they can be digitized, and made available online.

In that case only a selected few films should be returned, not thousands!

Is it not all the FHC's that have been ordered to return all microfilms?

I forgot to mention that sometimes we have been able to read things like "their forsterchild" by blowing up the page on a microfilmviewer, since it could not be read at the digital image.. Some of the digital images are also of a low resolution (perhaps the first that was digitized) -does anyone know if FS has a list of what resolutions each film has been digitized as?

grumpf grumpf, I'm still enjoying life though :)

It is not required to return all microfilm & microfiche, but you may return if you wish.

Thank You Mariann, but we were forced to!

around 100 microfilms were returned to Germany, but they kept ordering the rest (around 2000) to be returned as well.. At long last a new FHC leader refused to return any more and wrote an angry email (as far as from what I have head).
How do we get the already returned films back from Germany? -they are missed as some of the online-images of same church-records are only 100 dpi resolution (opposed to normally 300 dpi), so those microfilms, that contain our local Danish church-records are very much missed by us and the people, who have paid to be able to watch them..
