Are you able to use the record number with an alphabet at the end of the number to create a church account?

Yes, my membership record number has a letter at the end and I haven't had any problems. Usually if it gives you an error, it's because there's already an account associated with that record number (which you would need to recover), or the record number wasn't typed correctly (a clerk can verify the number).

The letter at the end of an MRN is a check digit, the letter A. In the early days in some systems you had to enter a capital A as opposed to a lowercase a. With improvements, most systems now will take either uppercase or lowercase as the entry. But if at first an entry does not seem to work, I would make sure you are using the capital A.

After that, the regular rules or MRN entering apply, with the most common error being that the MRN is already in use with another account, perhaps an old FamilySearch or other account established long ago and no longer remembered. If that happens, there are simple methods of retrieving the account that actually has the number attached, and then going from there.
