Pulpit Connections

Post by drepouille »

Our meetinghouse was built 2004-2005, and the pulpit connections have been modified over the years. However, our pulpit connections look nothing like those pictured in the Help Center under Chapel Sound System, Pulpit Connections.

This picture is just showing an example, and usually are found in newer Stake Centers. Our ward buildings in my stake only have a network port at the pulpit, but our newer Stake Center has connections like shown in the picture.

Our RJ-45 network port was the last one added to our pulpit, almost as an afterthought. We didn't even know when our FM installed it. I didn't know it was there until we replaced our DSL modem with a cable modem, and I discovered that we actually had two wired connections in the meetinghouse. Big surprise.

I thought I had uploaded this to the Wiki, but it might have been on a page that was deleted. It was given to us by the system installer for our stake center way back when.

This is probably closer to what you have. According to this, the record out is line level.

We have a Record Out (line level) 3.5 mm stereo jack under the Sacrament table, and Aux In RCA jacks with volume control on the side of the pulpit. But I need an audio output jack on the pulpit. I figure the distance between the Record Out jack and the pulpit is about 25 feet. I am guessing my only option is to purchase a male-to-male 3.5 mm stereo cable from 25 to 50 feet long.

It's unfortunate that there are no audio output jacks on the pulpit.

Probably a left over from when it was a clerk doing the recording and not the speaker.

Length, yes, but I'd question the connection. I'm not sure if the output is mono (2-conductor) or "stereo" (3-conductor with the program on the tip and middle.) What's more, it's likely to be line-level.

The laptop will have a 3-conductor input. The tip is signal and sleeve is ground, but the middle ring is a bias voltage for condenser mics which may or may not affect things.

There's a fair chance the 3 conductor 3.5mm cable will get the signal though, but it may be "too hot" for the laptop to handle. If only there was an easy way to adapt the XLR output of a crab box to your laptop. The crab box would give you a volume control. And, you probably already have 50' mic cables.

Items to consider:
Makie mixer or sure mixer
Angry Audio Bluetooth Gadget

Today I setup a Bluetooth Gadget ($315, BGS.CC) using the +4dB audio output of a mixer, which was getting the audio from the unknown level of the 1/8” house feed on the chapel wall.
I set a second microphone near the organ speaker in the front of the chapel and fed channel 2 of the mixer as an unprocessed organ audio source into zoom. It was a quick trial for today’s broadcast. I’ll look for a better organ feed shortly.

I taught the bishop/councilors in the building how to connect (and disconnect) phones with the Bluetooth Gadget. A makie mixer with a level meter is a great tool to prove audio and set levels. This setup allowed the phone to be the camera/zoom interface at the podium while utilizing the the processed mic audio out jack behind the clerk table 25 feet away.
