General Conference Broadcast

Post by lajackson »

I normally watch General Conference from the main Church website. I was not able to do so this time after the Saturday morning session.

The Saturday morning session quit working as the closing hymn began. I was not able to reestablish contact before the hymn and prayer ended.

The Saturday afternoon session stopped every few minutes and redirected to the beginning of the recording of the morning session. I was not able to watch the afternoon session at the Church site.

The Sunday morning Tabernacle Choir broadcast worked for about 15-minutes. It then redirected to the countdown timer for the afternoon session which was to begin in 0 days, 4 hours, the number of choir minutes remaining, and some seconds. I was not able to get either Sunday session at the Church website.

On Saturday I moved to KBYUtv. A discussion of their live on air feed, which always extends way past the edges of my 15-inch laptop screen, is off-topic here.

On Sunday during the Choir I found the Church YouTube channel. Great feed. Never missed a beat. A wonderful viewing experience with lousy selections down the right side for additional viewing. Fortunately, the conference talks fortified me enough that I did not go down that slippery slope.

But why can't the Church make their main page work? Too many hits? Too overloaded? No proper redirects or backups?

It was really frustrating. And such a wonderful conference.

We have a Roku. Historically, the church channel on the Roku doesn't work that well for conference. We watched the Saturday morning session on the church channel. After that we ended up switching to the BYU TV channel on the Roku. It worked better, but we still had some occasional issues. You gave me an idea...maybe I should see if I can watch the church channel via the You Tube app on Roku.

I have a Roku smart tv and I watched on it using the church channel via YouTube and it worked well.

We watched the Saturday morning session using the YouTube app on our Roku TV. However, the audio for the Saturday afternoon session was very choppy on YouTube, so I switched to the BYU-TV app on the Roku TV, and it worked very well for the remainder of the sessions. I did not try to use the church's Roku channel this time.

We watched the Saturday morning session from the church web site with no problems - we leave it running in between conference sessions to watch the news of the church feed. When the afternoon session was supposed to start, we were kicked back to the conference page. Trying to restart, it began replaying the Saturday Morning session. I finally got the afternoon session going, but it kept hanging after a few minutes and then would restart the morning session when we tried to watch again. I finally switched to YouTube and had no problems. Same behavior happened Sunday - about the time conference was to start Sunday morning, the broadcast hung and then went to the Saturday AM session again. We switched to YouTube and had no problems until the Sunday Afternoon session when the YouTube feed hung. I don't own a Roku so that option was not available to me.

I have never in my life had this many problems trying to watch conference... I have a good amount of bandwidth and the computer we were using is wired to the modem.
