Multi language streaming

Post by michaelbuhrley »

Our stake has both English speaking and Spanish speaking units. For our stake conferences and leadership meetings we always have the Spanish speaking members at the stake center with interpretation over wireless headsets and piped into the RS room.

For upcoming stake meetings we need to figure out a way to provide the webcasts with both English and Spanish audio as members are all viewing from home. I know we can set up two encoding systems side by side and have an HDMI splitter for the video and separate audio inputs but is there a system where we can feed both audio signals into one system so we are only encoding one video signal? Our stake center has cable internet but the upload is quite limited and I am not sure we can reliably originate two full streams. Previously the church had a video player with a language drop down at the bottom of the video and you could quickly select the audio stream you wanted. Just wondering if there is a solution that would make that possible with our limited upload bandwidth. What is the best practice here? This would only be for our stake events.

Thank you.

I don't believe that the church webcast system has any options other than two separate streams.

From a technical standpoint, it might be possible to send your stream to another location where it's split and translated. But, I'm not quite sure of the details of how that would work.

You may want to discuss with FM about increasing your upload bandwidth.

Which raises the question, what is your upload bandwidth?

The service is advertised as 5MB up but sometimes can get a sustained 2MB up if we disconnect everything and plug directly into the cable modem. My understanding is that past leadership has reached out to the provider but we have never seen uploads sustained in the ballpark.

Thanks for the additional information as well. I figured we would probably end up doing two streams. Perhaps we can do one over a LTE connection if running both over the cable internet does not work out.

Yeah, 2MB is a bit tight for two streams.

Something you might try is to track down all the cable connections between the modem and the street and make sure they're clean and free of any corrosion or anything that might hinder good connection. I'd also power cycle the modem and firewall and do another upload test. I've seen that fix things too.
