Teradek Blue Screens

Post by lajackson »

What does it mean when the Teradek VidiU encoder drops the video and sends out a blue screen to the webcast servers? The camera was feeding the rack. The Teradek switched from the camera/rack output to blue screen. I tried reseating the video cables. I tried dropping from Live back to Ready and then back to Live. Still blue.

The only way I found to solve the problem was to turn off the Teradek and turn it on again. This takes about 4 minutes, but when the box came back up it was streaming the camera feed from the rack again as it should have been doing all along.

Do I have a failing Teradek problem? Did an unnoticeable video interruption cause the Teradek to croak blue sky? Other thoughts?

This all happened in the middle of a stake conference webcast, of course.

A quick Google says the Teradek will send a blue screen if there's no video input detected. I'd imagine it could also happen if the video signal is not a resolution/frame rate the encoder can support.

It sounds like it just fritized out on you.

To avoid heat problems, I'd suggest mounting it in such a way that the vent holes are top and bottom with nothing blocking them. (Nice trick!). I've been tie-wrapping mine to a tripod leg. Otherwise, you might want to use a small fan to keep it cool.
