There is nothing in the handbook about one member of a male companionship having to hold the Melchizedek priesthood.

Not for two adults, but It does require it for having a YM as a companion.

Interestingly, it also says a YM can be assigned as a third minister in a companionship. I'm not sure if LCR allows that.

The ministering software allows an adult Aaronic Priesthood Priest and a young man Teacher companionship. Just tried it. The software also allows 3 people to be assigned. Can you quote the general handbook section number where is says a young man must have a Melchizedek priesthood companion?

Well, I just found it, 21.2.2, apparently nobody told the developers as it allows a young man teacher or priest to be assigned to an adult teacher or priest as a companion.

Sometimes the handbook gets updated and us lowly developers first hear about it from the forums

And sometimes whoever writes the business rules messes up. The youth ministering requiring a Melchizedek priesthood companion is not something new to my recollection.
