In Kind transfer from brokerage for missionary account

#1

Post by esa777 »

This is my first time attempting to post so apologies in advance for any breaches of protocol. I'm a financial clerk in my ward and in speaking with the father of one of our missionaries, he indicated that he currently pays his tithing from a brokerage account using "stock transfers" or "in-kind transfers." His missionary son also has a brokerage account and the father would like to know if the missionary, can make his mission donations the same way. I'm familiar enough with the transfer of securities, etc., I just don't know what it looks like on the members' side. Do they have the same donation slip when using this methodology and if so, could the missionary set everything up the same way? Thanks in advance and repeated apologies if I'm breaching forum etiquette. I did do a number of searches prior to starting my post but couldn't find any answers to this specific situation.

It seems to me the father and son are in a better position to find out by going though their existing contacts.

I thought tithing could be done though Philanthropies, but the FAQs on web page says otherwise.

I'd suggest referring to General Handbook 34.3.6 "In-Kind Donations" for more information. The stake president will need to contact Church Headquarters for permission.

Yes. The missionary would follow the same process for In-kind donations that the father uses. Part of that process identifies the specific category of the donation.

Since the father is familiar with the process, it would probably work best if he were to show the son how to make the donations.

Most brokerages would also allow the son to add the father as an authorized user of his brokerage account. If that is done, the father would be able to make the donations on behalf of the son, and the son would be able to concentrate on his missionary calling.

Whatever they do, they should avoid "pre-pay" for the mission. There's always a possibility of early termination of the mission (perhaps medical reasons) and donations are not refundable.
